3D Mapping of Swartkrans
Following on from work John Parkington and I started in
the early 1990's at Hoedjiespunt in the Western Cape,
Peter Schmid and I began developing a 3D GIS system for
Gladysvale. However, we needed to advance this
technology significantly. To this end, Peter Ungar and I
took on a graduate student - Joe Nigro - to develop a
sophisticated 3D mapping system. We chose Swartkrans
to experiment with as this site had large numbers of fossils
and a good record of excavation. We continue this work at
all of the sites we dig and are currently working on new
methods of 3D mapping.
